Normally IBS is diagnosed after a process of elimination, that is to say that other disorders that may have the same or similar symptoms will be ruled out first by blood tests, stool samples, medical history, physical examination etc.
Standard medical treatment v Alternative therapy
- dietary advice
- Stress management
- Medications
Some doctors though do recommend an increase in dietary fibre, which can aggravate the condition. High fibre foods can create problems for the IBS sufferer ( especially those with diarrhoea) so they should never be eaten alone or on an empty stomach.
Drugs prescribed can be :
Anti-spasmodic that blocks nerve impulses to the intestinal muscles.
Antacids
Stool softeners
Laxatives
General relaxers
Anti-cholinergic drugs ( that regulate contractions of the intestine)
All the above have adverse side effects some of which may make IBS symptoms worse.
Alternative treatments for the condition include
Elimination of foods in the diet to check for any intolerance's
Herbal preparations to soothe and heal the gut
Internal cleanse using herbs
Flaxseed to balance soluble and insoluble fibre intake
Essential fatty acids to lubricate the digestive tract
Acidophilus tablets to help restore the good/bad bacteria equation
EFT or emotional freedom terapy to help with the stress compound by condition in order to break the vicious circle that exacerbates the condition.
Colonic Hydrotherapy
To gently cleanse the colon and the digestive gut. Colon hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from thelarge intestine, without the use of drugs, by introducing pure, filtered, temperature regulated water into the colon, human waste is softend and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis.
This in turn relaxes the gut, relieves the abdominal spasms associated with IBS and aids constipation and the rest of the symptoms connected with the condition.
