Ayurveda is the traditional Indian medical approach to well-being and illness and has a completely different way of viewing health, to the west. The approach includes practices familiar to westerner such as yoga.
Ayurveda also includes looking at lifestyle and diet in a particular way, the use of herbs and most interesting to you as a massage practitioner, the very special therapies for detoxification of the human body.
Ayurveda considers carefully, a persons constitution how they are, who they are. People seem to fit into three general categories, Vata, Kapha and Pitta and depending on the constitution, therapies and approaches are decided to attain a healthy and happy life. Ayurveda believes that pains and aches are caused by obstruction of the flow of vayu (wind) and accumulation of toxins due to irregular food and lifestyle. Regular ayurvedic massage relaxes the muscles, increases appetite and generally makes life more joyful- thus ayurvedic massage works on body mind and spirit.
Each organism has its own vibratory rate. Every object in the universe has its own unique resonant frequency. Tap a wineglass and it will emit a ringing sound determined by its size, shape and the thickness.
When an opera singer vibrates a glass with her voice the singer has matched her voice to the resonant frequency of the glass and set it into vibration. As the singer increases the volume of her sound the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together and it shatters.
Luckily, our bodies are more flexible than a glass! The cells of our body enjoy the vibration of sound.
‘You are what you eat’…………..a common saying but not entirely true.
The truth……………‘You are what you can digest and absorb’
The digestive system is key to the whole health of the body.
To help improve digestion:
• Chew food thoroughly
• Eat less wheat – often irritates the gut. Choose rye bread, corn products, oatcakes, oat flakes, brown basmati rice and wheat free noodles and pasta
• Eat less refined foods and sugar – encourage multiplication of bacteria in the gut
• Increase fibre-rich foods – fruit, vegetables and whole grains
• Take live probiotic natural yoghurt every day – encourages growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.
• Supplement with digestive enzymes and probiotics – take for minimum of 1 month following stomach upset, antibiotics, indigestion or long term use of the pill or HRT
Food intolerance can lead to weight gain, despite following a low calorie diet.
If you are intolerant to a certain food, the body produces the antibody IgG which in turn increases inflammation in the body. This then causes water retention and bloating in addition to other signs of food intolerance such as headaches, aching joints and IBS. Wheat, dairy products and sugar, eaten frequently cause a ‘feel good’ factor in the body so we tend to eat more of them – but they are some of the worst for causing inflammation and weight gain.
If chronic emotional distress is toxic, the opposite emotions can be tonic to a degree. As with depression, there are medical costs to pessimism and corresponding benefits from optimism. For example one hundred a twenty two who had their first heart attack were evaluated on their of pessimism or optimism. Eight years later, of the twenty five most pessimistic men, twenty one had died; of the twenty five most optimistic, just six had died. Their mental outlook proved a better predictor of survival than any medical risk factor, including the amount of damage to the heart in the first attack, artery damage, cholesterol level, or blood pressure. In other research, patients going into artery bypass surgery who were more optimistic had a much faster recovery and fewer medical complications during and after surgery than did more pessimistic patients.
Aromatherapy can help reduce pain. A recent study carried out at the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago found that green apple fragrance significantly reduces headaches in those who enjoy the smell. It is thought that the scent affects pain pathways in the brain. There are a variety of oils which can help deal with the differing aspects of MS. Newly diagnosed people can be helped to work through the initial impact of the diagnosis. Neroli oil can be very useful and if there are neuro-muscular problems Rosemary is a good choice as it is a neuro-muscular relaxant.
